Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (pronounced [ˈhuɡo ˈɑlʋɑr ˈhenrik ˈɑːlto]; 3 February 1898 – 11 May 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware, as well as sculptures and paintings, though he never regarded himself as an artist, seeing painting and sculpture as "branches of the tree whose trunk is architecture."
Born in the age of "form follow function" and at the cusp of Modernism, Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto graduated with honors in architecture from Helsinki University of Technology. His early works combined Neoclassical ideas with the International Style. Later, Aalto's buildings were characterized by asymmetry, curved walls, and complex textures.

The life-span of a building outlives that from its makers by many people centuries, if done right. Therefore we ought to take into account that, much as we build to meet present demands, we build for the future, using materials, forms, structures, and planning solutions that endure the test of time. Otherwise our buildings may find themselves obsolete, unloved, and even perhaps demolished before long.
